孟子曰：“以佚［1］道使民，虽劳不怨；
以生道杀民，虽死不怨杀者。”
Mencius said, “Let the people be employed in
the way which is intended to secure their ease, and
though they be toiled, they will not murmur. Let
them be put to death in the way which is intended to
preserve their lives, and though they die, they will
not murmur at him who puts them to death.”
【注释】［1］佚（y#）：同“逸”。
【译文】孟子说：“按照让百姓安逸的原则来
役使民众，百姓即便辛劳也不怨恨；按照让
百姓生存的原则去杀人，虽然有人死去，人
们也不会怨恨杀的人。”
