或曰：“雍也仁而不佞。［1］”子曰：“焉
用佞？御人以口给［2］，屡憎于人。不知其仁，
焉用佞？”
Some one said, “Yung is truly virtuous, but he
is not ready with his tongue.” The Master said, “What
is the good of being ready with the tongue? They
who encounter men with smartnesses of speech for
the most part procure themselves hatred. I know
not whether he be truly virtuous, but why should he
show readiness of the tongue? ”
【注释】［1］雍：即冉雍，字仲弓。佞（n#ng）：
口才好，能言善辩。［2］御：抵挡，对付。
口 给：《 辞 源 》 解 为“ 口 辞 敏 捷。 给， 足，
言辞不穷的意思”。《十三经辞典》解为“口
齿伶俐，能言善辩。御，抵御，对付”。以
