子曰：“道不行，乘桴［1］浮于海。从我
者其由与？”子路闻之喜。子曰：“由也好
勇过我，无所取材［2］！”
The Master said, “My doctrines make no way.
I will get upon a raft, and float about on the sea. He
that will accompany me will be Yu, I dare say.” Tsze-
lu hearing this was glad, upon which the Master
said, “Yu is fonder of daring than I am. He does not
exercise his judgment upon matters. ”
【注释】［1］桴（f%）：木筏。［2］材：《汉
语大词典》：“通‘哉’。语气词。《论语·公
冶长》：‘由也好勇过我，无所取材！’何
晏集解：‘古字材、哉同。’”
