孟子曰：“君子之泽五世而斩［1］，小人
之泽五世而斩。予未得为孔子徒也，予私淑［2］
诸人也。”
Mencius said, “The influence of a sovereign
sage terminates in the fifth generation. The influence
of a mere sage does the same. Although I could
not be a disciple of Confucius himself, I have
endeavoured to cultivate my virtue by means of
others who were.”
【注释】［1］泽：恩泽。斩：断绝。［2］淑：
借为“叔”，获取。“私淑”意为私自敬仰
并尊之为师，但未得其亲身传授。
【译文】孟子说：“君子德行的影响五代以后
便断绝了，小人德行的影响五代以后便断绝
