孟子曰：“王者之迹熄［1］而《诗》亡，《诗》
亡然后《春秋》作。晋之《乘》，楚之《梼杌》，
鲁之《春秋》［2］，一也。其事则齐桓、晋文，
其文则史。孔子曰：‘其义则丘窃取之矣。’”
Mencius said, “The traces of sovereign rule
were extinguished, and the royal odes ceased to be
made. When those odes ceased to be made, then the
Spring and Autumn was produced. The Sheng of Jin,
the Taowu of Chu, and the Spring and Autumn of
Lu were books of the same character. The subject
of the Spring and Autumn was the affairs of Huan of
Qi and Wen of Jin, and its style was the historical.
Confucius said. ‘Its righteous decisions I ventured to
make.’ ”
