Some one says to him. ‘Such is not the way of a
good man;’ and he replies, ‘With your leave I will
diminish my appropriations, and will take only one
fowl a month, until next year, when I will make an
end of the practice.’ If you know that the thing is
unrighteous, then use all despatch in putting an end
to it: —why wait till next year?’ ”
【注释】［1］戴盈之：宋国大夫。［2］什一：
十分之一的税率。［3］兹：年。［4］攘：偷。
［5］损：减少。
【译文】戴盈之说：“田租十分取一，取消关
卡市场的税收，今年还办不到。先减轻征收，
等到明年，然后再完全改正，怎么样？”
孟子说：“现在有个人每天偷他邻居的鸡，
有人对他说：‘这不是君子的行为。’那人说：
‘我先少偷些，每月偷一只，等到明年，然
后再完全改正。’如果知道这样做不符合正道，
