孟子曰：“欲贵者，人之同心也。人人
有贵于己者，弗思耳。人之所贵者，非良贵也。
赵孟［1］之所贵，赵孟能贱之。《诗》云［2］：‘既
醉以酒，既饱以德。’言饱乎仁义也，所以
不愿人之膏粱之味也［3］；令闻广誉施于身［4］，
所以不愿人之文绣［5］也。”

Mencius said, “To desire to be honored is
the common mind of men. And all men have in
themselves that which is truly honorable. Only they
do not think of it. The honor which men confer
is not good honor. Those whom Zhao the Great
ennobles he can make mean again. It is said in the
Book of Poetry, ‘He has filled us with his wine; he
has satiated us with his goodness.’ ‘Satiated us with
his goodness,’ that is, satiated us with benevolence
and righteousness, and he who is so, consequently,
