孟子曰：“有天爵［1］者，有人爵［2］者。
仁义忠信，乐善不倦，此天爵也；公卿大夫，
此人爵也。古之人修其天爵，而人爵从之。
今之人修其天爵，以要［3］人爵；既得人爵，
而弃其天爵，则惑之甚者也，终亦必亡而已
矣。”
Mencius said, “There is a nobility of Heaven,
and there is a nobility of man. Benevolence,
righteousness, self-consecration, and fidelity, with
unwearied joy in these virtues; —these constitute the
nobility of Heaven. To be a gong, a qing, or a dafu;
—this constitutes the nobility of man. The men of
antiquity cultivated their nobility of Heaven, and the
nobility of man came to them in its train. The men
of the present day cultivate their nobility of Heaven
in order to seek for the nobility of man, and when
