曾皙嗜羊枣［1］，而曾子不忍食羊枣。公
孙丑问曰：“脍炙［2］与羊枣孰美？”
孟子曰：“脍炙哉！”
公孙丑曰：“然则曾子何为食脍炙而不
食羊枣？”
曰：“脍炙所同也，羊枣所独也。讳名
不讳姓，姓所同也，名所独也。”
Mencius said, “Zeng Xi was fond of sheep-
dates, and his son, the philosopher Zeng, could not
bear to eat sheep-dates.” Gongsun Chou asked,
saying, “Which is best, —minced meat and broiled
meat, or sheep-dates?”
Mencius said, “Mince and broiled meat, to be
sure.”
Gongsun Chou went on, “Then why did the
philosopher Zeng eat mince and broiled meat, and
