would not eat sheep-dates?”
Mencius answered, “For mince and broiled
meat there is a common liking, while that for sheep-
dates was peculiar. We avoid the name, but do not
avoid the surname. The surname is common; the
name is peculiar.”
【注释［】 1］羊枣：因形状色泽似羊屎，故称羊枣。
杨伯峻《孟子译注》：“何焯《义门读书记》
云：‘羊枣非枣也，乃柿之小者。初生色黄，
孰则黑，似羊矢，其树再接则成柿。’”［2］
脍炙：切细的肉和烤熟的肉。
【译文】曾皙爱吃羊枣，（死后，他的儿子）
曾参就不忍心吃羊枣。公孙丑问道：“烤肉
与羊枣，哪样味道好？”
孟子说：“当然是烤肉！”
公孙丑又问：“那么曾子为什么吃烤肉
而不吃羊枣？”
