子
asks me, ‘May this man be put to death?’ I will
answer him, ‘He may.’ If he ask me, ‘Who may put
him to death? ‘I will answer him, ‘The chief criminal
judge may put him to death.’ But now with one Yan
to smite another Yan:—how should I have advised
this?”
【注释】［1］沈同：齐国大夫。［2］子哙（ku3i）：
燕国国君，名哙。［3］子之：燕国相，专权
独断。子哙让国君之位于子之，引起燕太子
及大臣的强烈不满，导致燕国内乱。齐国乘
机出兵，攻下燕国都城，杀掉子哙与子之。［4］
天吏：代表上天管理人民的官员。
【译文】沈同以私人身份问孟子：“燕国可以
去讨伐吗？”
孟子说：“可以。燕王子哙不应该轻率
地把燕国让给别人，相国子之也不应该从子
哙手里接受燕国。比方有这样一个人，你很
