to resist. When one subdues men by virtue, in their
hearts’ core they are pleased, and sincerely submit,
as was the case with the seventy disciples in their
submission to Confucius. What is said in the Book of
Poetry, ‘From the west, from the east, From the south,
from the north, There was not one who thought of
refusing submission,’ is an illustration of this.”

【译文】孟子说：“依靠武力假借仁的名义统
一天下叫作‘霸’，称霸一定要有强大的国力，
依靠道德施行仁政而统一天下叫作‘王’，
称王不用凭靠强大的国力。商汤凭借七十里
的土地称王，文王凭借百里的土地称王。靠
武力使人服从，并不是真心服从，只是力量
不足以反抗；凭借道德使人信服，百姓心悦
诚服，就像孔子的弟子信服孔子一样。《诗经》
