孟子曰：“以力假［1］仁者霸，霸必有大
国，以德行仁者王，王不待［2］大。汤以七十
里，文王以百里。以力服人者，非心服也，
力不赡［3］也；以德服人者，中心悦而诚服也，
如七十子之服孔子也。《诗》云：‘自西自东，
自南自北，无思不服。’此之谓也。”
Mencius said, “He who, using force, makes a
pretence to benevolence is the leader of the princes.
A leader of the princes requires a large kingdom.
He who, using virtue, practises benevolence is the
sovereign of the kingdom. To become the sovereign
of the kingdom, a prince need not wait for a large
kingdom. Tang did it with only seventy li, and
king Wen with only a hundred. When one by force
subdues men, they do not submit to him in heart.
They submit, because their strength is not adequate
