子曰：“孟之反不伐［1］，奔而殿，将入门，
策其马，曰：‘非敢后也，马不进也。’”
The Master said, “Mang Chih-fan does not
boast of his merit. Being in the rear on an occasion
of flight, when they were about to enter the gate, he
whipped up his horse, saying, ‘It is not that I dare to
be last. My horse would not advance.’ ”
【注释】［1］孟之反：名侧，字之反，鲁国大夫。
不伐：不自夸。
【译文】孔子说：“孟之反不自夸，军队败逃
时他殿后，快要进城门时，故意鞭打自己的马，
说：‘我本来是不敢在最后的，是因为马不
肯前进。’”
