司马牛问君子。子曰：“君子不忧不惧。”
曰：“不忧不惧，斯谓之君子已乎？”子曰：
“内省不疚，夫何忧何惧？”
Sze-ma Niu asked about the superior man. The
Master said, ‘‘The superior man has neither anxiety
nor fear.” “Being without anxiety or fear!” said Niu;
— “does this constitute what we call the superior
man?” The Master said, “When internal examination
discovers nothing wrong, what is there to be anxious
about, what is there to fear?”
【译文】司马牛问什么是君子。孔子说：“君子
不忧愁不畏惧。”司马牛说：“不忧愁不畏惧，
这就叫作君子了吗？”孔子说：“内心自省，
问心无愧，哪还有什么可忧愁可畏惧的呢？”
