子曰：“不得中行［1］而与之，必也狂狷［2］
乎！狂者进取，狷者有所不为也。”
The Master said, “Since I cannot get men
pursuing the due medium, to whom I might
communicate my instructions, I must find the ardent
and the cautiously-decided. The ardent will advance
and lay hold of truth; the cautiously-decided will
keep themselves from what is wrong.”
【注释】［1］中行：行为合乎中庸之道。［2］
狂狷：激进与拘谨保守。
【译文】孔子说：“如果找不到行为上合乎中
庸之道的人与他交往，也一定要找狂狷的！
狂者肯于进取，狷者不会为非作歹。”
