fellow- villagers and neighbours pronounce to be
fraternal.” Again the disciple asked, “I venture to
ask about the class still next in order.” The Master
said, “They are determined to be sincere in what
they say, and to carry out what they do. They are
obstinate little men. Yet perhaps they may make the
next class.” Tsze-kung finally inquired, “Of what
sort are those of the present day, who engage in
government?” The Master said, ‘‘Pooh! they are so
many pecks and hampers, not worth being taken
into account.”
【注释】［1］士：指知识阶层中未仕和已仕而
官位最低的人。［2］硁硁（k8ng?k8ng）：击
石声。形容固执。［3］筲（sh`o）：盛饭的竹器。
斗筲，比喻器量狭小，才识短浅。
【译文】子贡问道：“怎样做才可以称之为士？”
孔子说：“自己为人做事有知耻之心，出使
