子贡问曰：“孔文子［1］何以谓之文也？”
子曰：“敏而好学，不耻下问，是以谓之文也。”
Tsze-kung asked, saying, “On what ground
did Kung-wan get that title of Wan? ” The Master
said, “He was of an active nature and yet fond of
learning, and he was not ashamed to ask and learn
of his inferiors! On these grounds he has been styled
Wan.”

【译文】子贡问道：“孔文子为何谥号‘文’呢？”
孔子说：“他勤勉好学，不以对下请教为耻，
所以谥‘文’。”
