林放［1］问礼之本。子曰：“大哉问！礼，
与其奢也，宁俭；丧，与其易［2］也，宁戚。”
Lin Fang asked what was the first thing to be
attended to in ceremonies. The Master said, “A great
question indeed! In festive ceremonies, it is better
to be sparing than extravagant. In the ceremonies of
mourning, it is better that there be deep sorrow than
a minute attention to observances. ”
【注释】［1］林放：鲁国人，以知礼著称，生
卒年不详。［2］易：和易。上句“奢”与“俭”
反义相对，下句“易”与“戚”反义相对。
汉包咸解曰：“易，和易也。言礼之本意，
失于奢，不如俭也；丧失于和易，不如哀戚
也。”（何晏《论语集解》）
