importance, and delivers? What are there which
he considers of secondary importance, and allows
himself to be idle about? But as in the case of plants,
which are assorted according to their classes, so
he deals with his disciples. How can the way of a
superior man be such as to make fools of any of
them? Is it not the sage alone, who can unite in one
the beginning and the consummation of learning?”

［2］倦：疑是“传”字之误。
【译文】子游说：“子夏的弟子，做些洒水扫地、
接待宾客的事情是可以的，但不过是末节罢
了，根本的东西则没有学到，这怎么能行呢？”
子夏听了这话，说：“咳！子游错了！君子
的学问之道，哪个先传授？哪个后传授？就
好像草木一样，区别得清清楚楚。君子的学
问之道，怎么可以歪曲呢？能有始有终，循
