Mencius, having heard of this remark, said,
“According to the prescribed rules, in the court,
individuals may not change their places to speak
with one another, nor may they pass from their ranks
to bow to one another. I was wishing to observe this
rule, and Ziao understands it that I was slighting
him: —is not this strange?”
【注释】［1］公行子：人名，齐国大夫。［2］
右师：先秦时期官名，此处指齐国大夫王 ，
字子敖。［3］简：这里是怠慢的意思。［4］
历位：越位。
【译文】公行子的儿子死了，右师前往吊丧，
进了门，有上前和右师交谈的人，有靠近右
师座位与右师交谈的人。孟子不和右师说话，
右师不高兴地说：“诸位大人都和我交谈，
唯独孟子不和我交谈，是怠慢我。”
孟子听到这话，说：“依礼，在朝廷上
