not to allow their hands to touch in giving and
receiving is the general rule; when a sister-in-law is
drowning, to rescue her with the hand is a peculiar
exigency.’ ”
Kun said, “The whole kingdom is drowning.
How strange it is that you will not rescue it!”
Mencius answered, “A drowning kingdom
must be rescued with right principles, as a drowning
sister-in-law has to be rescued with the hand. Do
you wish me to rescue the kingdom with my hand?”
【注释】［1］淳于髡（k$n）：姓淳于，名髡，
齐国政治家、思想家，有名的辩士。［2］男
女授受不亲：指男女不能亲手递受物品。授，
给予。受，收取。［3］援：牵引，拉。［4］
权：权宜，变通。
【译文】淳于髡问：“男女之间不亲手递接东西，
这是礼吗？”
