孟 子 曰：“ 规 矩， 方 员 之 至 也； 圣 人，
人伦之至也。欲为君尽君道；欲为臣尽臣道，
二者皆法尧、舜而已矣。不以舜之所以事尧
事君，不敬其君者也；不以尧之所以治民治
民，贼其民者也。孔子曰：‘道二：仁与不
仁而已矣。’暴其民甚，则身弑国亡；不甚，
则身危国削。名之曰‘幽厉’［1］，虽孝子慈孙，
百世不能改也。《诗》云‘殷鉴不远，在夏
后之世’［2］，此之谓也。”
Mencius said, “The compass and square
produce perfect circles and squares. By the sages,
the human relations are perfectly exhibited. He who
as a sovereign would perfectly discharge the duties
of a sovereign, and he who as a minister would
perfectly discharge the duties of a minister, have
only to imitate—the one Yao, and the other Shun.
