should arise in the course of five hundred years, and
that during that time there should be men illustrious
in their generation. From the commencement of the
Zhou dynasty till now, more than seven hundred
years have elapsed. Judging numerically, the date is
past. Examining the character of the present time,
we might expect the rise of such individuals in it.
But Heaven does not yet wish that the kingdom
should enjoy tranquillity and good order. If it wished
this, who is there besides me to bring it about? How
should I be otherwise than dissatisfied?”
【注释】［1］豫：高兴。［2］五百年必有王者
兴：朱熹《四书章句集注》曰：“自尧舜至汤，
自汤至文武，皆五百余年而圣人出。”［3］
名世者：朱熹《四书章句集注》曰：“名世，
谓其人德业闻望，可名于一世者，为之辅佐，
若 皋 陶、 稷、 契、 伊 尹、 莱 朱、 太 公 望、 散
宜生之属。”
