others which they had not, and simply had certain
officers to keep order among them. It happened that
there was a mean fellow, who made it a point to look
out for a conspicuous mound, and get up upon it.
Thence he looked right and left, to catch in his net
the whole gain of the market. The people all thought
his conduct mean, and therefore they proceeded to
lay a tax upon his wares. The taxing of traders took
its rise from this mean fellow.'”
【注释】［1］致为臣而归：指孟子辞去齐宣王
的客卿之职而归故乡。致，在古代有“致仕”“致
禄”“致政”等多种说法，其中的“致”都是“归
还”“辞去”的意思。［2］时子：齐国大臣。
［3］中国：在国都中，指临淄城。［4］钟：
古代度量单位。［5］矜式：效法。［6］陈子：
孟子弟子陈臻。［7］龙断：即“垄断”。［8］
丈夫：对成年男子的通称。［9］罔：通“网”，
网罗，搜刮，牟取。
