what is right? Moreover, when the superior men of
old had errors, they reformed them. The superior
men of the present time, when they have errors,
persist in them. The errors of the superior men of
old were like eclipses of the sun and moon. All the
people witnessed them, and when they had reformed
them, all the people looked up to them with their
former admiration. But do the superior men of the
present day only persist in their errors? They go on
to apologize for them likewise.”

【注释】［1］惭于孟子：孟子曾经劝齐宣王，
而王不听，故惭愧。［2］陈贾：齐国大夫。
［3］患：担忧。［4］恶（w$）：表示惊叹。
［5］管叔：周武王的弟弟，周公的哥哥，封
地在管。监：监督管理。［6］使：任用。［7］
未之尽：不能全部做到。［8］徒：仅仅。［9］
辞：设辞辩解。
