孟子曰：“鸡鸣而起，孳孳［1］为善者，
舜之徒也。鸡鸣而起，孳孳为利者，蹠［2］之
徒也。欲知舜与蹠之分，无他，利与善之间［3］
也。”
Mencius said, “He who rises at cock-crowing and
addresses himself earnestly to the practice of virtue, is
a disciple of Shun. He who rises at cock-crowing, and
addresses himself earnestly to the pursuit of gain, is a
disciple of Zhi. If you want to know what separates
Shun from Zhi, it is simply this: —the interval between
the thought of gain and the thought of virtue.”
【注释】［1］孳孳（z~）：同“孜孜”，勤勉不懈。
［2］蹠（zh!）：同“跖”，相传为柳下惠的
弟弟，春秋时的大盗，又称“盗跖”。［3］
间（ji3n）：差异。
