illuminates. Flowing water is a thing which does not
proceed till it has filled the hollows in its course. The
student who has set his mind on the doctrines of the
sage, does not advance to them but by completing
one lesson after another.”
【注释】［1］东山：鲁国东部的高山，即蒙山。
［2］太山：泰山。［3］容光：容得下光线，
指非常细小的缝隙。［4］科：通“窠”，坎，坑。
［5］成章：指事物达到一定阶段或有一定规模。
【译文】孟子说：“孔子登上了东山，就觉得鲁
国变小了；登上泰山，就觉得整个天下都变
小了。所以，观看过大海的人，便难以被其
他水所吸引了；在圣人门下学习过的人，便
难以被其他言论所吸引了。观看水有一定的
方法，一定要观看它壮阔的波澜。日月有光辉，
只要容得下光线的小缝隙也一定能被照到；
流水这东西，不把坑坑洼洼填满不向前流；
