孟子曰：“耻之于人大矣。为机变［1］之
巧者，无所用耻焉。不耻不若人，何若人有？”
Mencius said, “The sense of shame is to a man
of great importance. Those who form contrivances
and versatile schemes distinguished for their
artfulness, do not allow their sense of shame to come
into action. When one differs from other men in
not having this sense of shame, what will he have in
common with them?”
【注释】［1］机变：机谋，权诈。
【译文】孟子说：“羞耻之心对于人关系极大。
好行阴谋权诈之术的乖巧者，是没有羞耻之
心的。不羞耻（自己）不如他人，又怎能赶
得上他人？”
