“Indeed, how could Shun have forbidden it?
Gaoyao had received the law from a proper source.”
“In that case what would Shun have done?”
“Shun would have regarded abandoning the
kingdom as throwing away a worn out sandal. He
would privately have taken his father on his back,
and retired into concealment, living somewhere
along the seacoast. There he would have been all his
life, cheerful and happy, forgetting the kingdom.”

【 译 文】 桃 应 问：“ 舜 做 天 子， 皋 陶 做 法 官，
假如瞽瞍杀了人，该怎么办呢？”
孟子说：“将他抓起来罢了。”
（桃应问：）“那么舜不阻拦吗？”
