孟子曰：“尧、舜，性之也；汤武，身之也；
五霸，假之也。久假而不归，恶［1］知其非有
也？”
Mencius said, “Benevolence and righteousness
were natural to Yao and Shun. Tang and Wu made
them their own. The five chiefs of the princes
feigned them. Having borrowed them long and not
returned them, how could it be known they did not
own them?”
【注释】［1］恶（w$）：疑问代词，相当于“何”
“怎么”。
【译文】孟子说：“尧、舜推行仁道，这是天性
使然；汤、武推行仁道，是身体力行；春秋
五霸假借仁道，推行霸道。长久地假借而不
