章
子 曰：“ 听 讼［1］， 吾 犹 人［2］ 也， 必 也
使 无 讼 乎！” 无 情［3］ 者 不 得 尽 其 辞［4］。 大
畏民志［5］，此谓知本［6］。
The Master said, “In hearing litigations, I am
like any other body. What is necessary is to cause
the people to have no litigations.” So, those who are
devoid of principle find it impossible to carry out
their speeches, and a great awe would be struck into
men’s minds;—this is called knowing the root.
【注释】［1］听讼：听，指审理。讼，诉讼。［2］
犹人：如同别人一样。［3］无情：没有真实
情况，寓意“隐瞒实情”。［4］尽其辞：竭
尽申辩，这里有“狡辩”之意。［5］民志：
这里指民众的诉讼之心。［6］知本：知道根本。
