himself to others. Such a man will be distinguished
in the country; he will be distinguished in his
clan. “As to the man of notoriety, he assumes the
appearance of virtue, but his actions are opposed to
it, and he rests in this character without any doubts
about himself. Such a man will be heard of in the
country; he will be heard of in the clan.”
【注释】［1］士：介于大夫和庶民之间的阶层。
诸侯设置上士、中士、下士三等官阶。达：通达，
显达。
【 译 文】 子 张 问：“ 士 怎 样 才 可 称 得 上 达？”
孔子说：“你所说的达是什么意思？”子张
回答说：“在诸侯国任职一定有名声，在大
夫家任职一定有名声。”孔子说：“这是有
名声，而不是达。所谓达，品质正直，爱好
仁义，善于观察别人言语和容色，时常考虑
着谦居人下。这样的人，在诸侯国任职一定
