孟子曰:“舜生于诸冯[1],迁于负夏,
卒于鸣条,东夷之人也。文王生于岐周[2],
卒于毕郢[3],西夷之人也。地之相去也,千
有余里;世之相后也,千有余岁。得志行乎
中国,若合符节[4]。先圣后圣,其揆[5]一也。”
Mencius said, “Shun was born in Zhufeng,
removed to Fuxia, and died in Mingtiao; —a man
near the wild tribes on the east. King Wen was born
in Zhou by mount Qi, and died in Biying; — a man
near the wild tribes on the west. Those regions were
distant from one another more than a thousand li,
and the age of the one sage was posterior to that of
the other more than a thousand years. But when
they got their wish, and carried their principles into
practice throughout the Middle Kingdom, it was like
uniting the two halves of a seal. When we examine
