“Herein,” said the officer, “I am guilty.”
Another day, Mencius had an audience of the
king, and said to him, “Of the governors of Your
Majesty’s cities I am acquainted with five, but the
only one of them who knows his faults is Kong Ju-
xin.”
He then repeated the conversation to the king,
who said, “In this matter, I am the guilty one.”
【注释】［1］平陆：齐国边境城邑名，故址在
今山东汶上县北。［2］大夫：指当地长官，
即下文所言孔距心。［3］失伍：掉队，擅离
职守。［4］羸（l9i）：瘦弱。
【译文】孟子来到了平陆。对那里的长官（孔
距心）说：“如果您的战士一天三次擅离职守，
开除他吗？”
（孔距心）说：“不必等到三次。”
