子
He whose goodness has been filled up is what is
called beautiful man. He whose completed goodness
is brightly displayed is what is called a great man.
When this great man exercises a transforming
influence, he is what is called a sage. When the
sage is beyond our knowledge, he is what is called
a spirit-man. Yuezheng is between the two first
characters, and below the four last.”
【注释】［1］浩生不害：姓浩生，名不害，齐国人。
［2］乐正子：孟子弟子。
【译文】浩生不害问：“乐正子是什么样的人？”
孟子说：“是个善人，是个诚实的人。”
“什么叫善？什么叫诚实？”
孟子说：“值得别人喜爱就叫善，自己
身上确实具有值得让人喜爱的品质就叫信，
善、信充实就叫美，既充实又光辉四射就叫大，
大而又能推行善信以教化天下就叫圣，圣到
