12.6

      子张问明。子曰:“浸润之谮[1],肤受
之 [2],不行焉,可谓明也已矣。浸润之谮,
肤受之 ,不行焉,可谓远也已矣。”

      Tsze-chang asked what constituted intelligence.
The Master said, “He with whom neither slander
that gradually soaks into the mind, nor statements
that startle like a wound in the flesh, are successful,
may be called intelligent indeed. Yea, he with whom
neither soaking slander, nor startling statements, are
successful, may be called farseeing.”

【注释】[1]谮(z-n):谗言,诬陷。[2]愬(s&):
谗毁,诽谤。

【译文】子张问怎样才是明察。孔子说:“像
水滴浸润而不易察觉的谗言,像皮肤受尘那
