庸
it their study. Therefore, the superior man cultivates
a friendly harmony, without being weak. How firm
is he in his energy! He stands erect in the middle,
without inclining to either side. How firm is he in
his energy! When good principles prevail in the
government of his country, he does not change from
what he was in retirement. How firm is he in his
energy! When bad principles prevail in the country,
he maintains his course to death without changing.
How firm is he in his energy!”

抑：连词，或，还是。［3］而：你的。［4］
报：报复。［5］衽金革：兵器甲胄裹身。金：
指兵器。革：皮革，这里指皮革制成的甲胄。
［6］和而不流：性情平和而不随波逐流。［7］
矫：坚强的样子。［8］不变塞：不改变操守。
塞：不通达，这里指困厄，志向难以实现。
