would have served them alive; they served the
departed as they would have served them had they
been continued among them — the height of filial
piety. By the ceremonies of the sacrifices to Heaven
and Earth they served God, and by the ceremonies
of the ancestral temple they sacrificed to their
ancestors. He who understands the ceremonies of
the sacrifices to Heaven and Earth, and the meaning
of the several sacrifices to ancestors, would find the
government of a kingdom as easy as to look into his
palm!”

【注释】［1］宗器：宗庙祭器。［2］荐：指陈
设祭品。［3］时食：时令果品及食物。时：
季节。［4］昭穆：古代宗法制度，宗庙中神
主的排列次序，始祖居中，以下父子（祖、
父）递为昭穆，左为昭，右为穆。［5］旅酬：
指祭祀快结束时众人从上到下依次递相劝酒，
而卑者先饮，故云“下为上”。［6］逮：到达。
