四
章
君 子 素 其 位［1］ 而 行， 不 愿 乎 其 外［2］。
素富贵，行乎富贵；素贫贱，行乎贫贱；素
夷狄［3］，行乎夷狄；素患难，行乎患难。君
子无入［4］而不自得焉。在上位，不陵［5］下；
在下位，不援［6］上。正己而不求于人，则无
怨。上不怨天，下不尤［7］人。故君子居易［8］
以俟命［9］，小人行险以侥幸。子曰：“射有
似乎君子，失诸正鹄［10］，反求诸其身。”
The superior man does what is proper to
the station in which he is; he does not desire to go
beyond this. In a position of wealth and honor, he
does what is proper to a position of wealth and
honor. In a poor and low position, he does what
is proper to a poor and low position. Situated
among barbarous tribes, he does what is proper to
a situation among barbarous tribes. In a position of
