章
君 子 素 其 位[1] 而 行, 不 愿 乎 其 外[2]。
素富贵,行乎富贵;素贫贱,行乎贫贱;素
夷狄[3],行乎夷狄;素患难,行乎患难。君
子无入[4]而不自得焉。在上位,不陵[5]下;
在下位,不援[6]上。正己而不求于人,则无
怨。上不怨天,下不尤[7]人。故君子居易[8]
以俟命[9],小人行险以侥幸。子曰:“射有
似乎君子,失诸正鹄[10],反求诸其身。”
The superior man does what is proper to
the station in which he is; he does not desire to go
beyond this. In a position of wealth and honor, he
does what is proper to a position of wealth and
honor. In a poor and low position, he does what
is proper to a poor and low position. Situated
among barbarous tribes, he does what is proper to
a situation among barbarous tribes. In a position of
