孟子曰：“今之事君者皆曰：‘我能为
君辟土地，充府库。’今之所谓良臣，古之
所谓民贼也。君不乡道［1］，不志于仁，而求
富之，是富桀也。‘我能为君约与国［2］，战
必克。’今之所谓良臣，古之所谓民贼也。
君不乡道，不志于仁，而求为之强战，是辅
桀也。由今之道，无变今之俗，虽与之天下，
不能一朝居也。”
Mencius said, “Those who nowadays serve
their sovereigns say, ‘We can for our sovereign
enlarge the limits of the cultivated ground, and fill
his treasuries and arsenals.’ Such persons are nowa-
days called ‘good ministers,’ but anciently they
were called ‘robbers of the people.’ If a sovereign
follows not the right way, nor has his mind bent on
benevolence, to seek to enrich him is to enrich a Jie.
