无馈也。悦贤不能举，又不能养也，可谓悦
贤乎？”
曰：“敢问国君欲养君子，如何斯可谓
养矣？”
曰：“以君命将之，再拜稽首而受。其
后廪人［9］继粟，庖人［10］继肉，不以君命将
之。子思以为鼎肉使己仆仆［11］尔亟拜也，非
养君子之道也。尧之于舜也，使其子九男事之，
二女女焉，百官牛羊仓廪备，以养舜于畎亩
之中，后举而加［12］诸上位。故曰，王公之尊
贤者也。”
Wan Zhang said, “What is the reason that
a scholar does not accept a stated support from a
prince?”
Mencius replied, “He does not presume to do
so. When a prince loses his state, and then accepts
a stated support from another prince, this is in
accordance with propriety. But for a scholar to
