them as transmitted, and so knew them. From king
Wen to Confucius were 500 years and more. As to
Taigong Wang and Sanyi Sheng, they saw Wen, and
so knew his doctrines, while Confucius heard them
as transmitted, and so knew them. From Confucius
downwards until now, there are only 100 years and
somewhat more. The distance in time from the sage
is so far from being remote, and so very near at hand
was the sage’s residence. In these circumstances, is
there no one to transmit his doctrines? Yea, is there
no one to do so?”

【注释】［1］莱朱：汤的贤臣。［2］散宜生；
文王贤臣。［3］然而无有乎尔，则亦无有乎
尔：朱熹《四书章句集注》引林氏的解释认为：
前半句“然而无有乎尔”指没有“见而知之”
者；后半句“则亦无有乎尔”指五百余岁之
后更不会有“闻而知之”者了。可见，孟子
对没有人继承孔子圣人学说的忧虑。
