their love, or who hate and yet know the excellences
of the object of their hatred. Hence it is said, in
the common adage, “A man does not know the
wickedness of his son; he does not know the richness
of his growing corn.” This is what is meant by saying
that if the person be not cultivated, a man cannot
regulate his family.

哀怜，怜悯。［3］敖惰：傲慢怠惰。敖：通“傲”。
［4］硕：丰硕。
【译文】所谓管理好家庭在于修养自己的品德，
是因为人对于亲爱的人总有一种偏爱，对于
轻视厌恶的人总有一种偏见，对于敬畏的人
总有一种偏向，对于怜悯的人也有一种偏向，
对于傲慢怠惰的人总有一种偏见。所以喜爱
某种人也知道他的缺点，厌恶某种人也知道
他的优点，这种人天下罕见啊。因此有谚语
