章

仲尼曰：“君子中庸［1］，小人反中庸。
君子之中庸也，君子而时中；小人之中庸也［2］，
小人而无忌惮［3］也。”

Zhongni said, “The superior man embodies
the course of the Mean; the mean man acts contrary
to the course of the Mean. The superior man’s
embodying the course of the Mean is because he is
a superior man, and so always maintains the Mean.
The mean man’s acting contrary to the course of
the Mean is because he is a mean man, and has no
caution.”

【注释】［1］中庸：不偏颇，不过头，不欠缺，
保持自然常态，是为中庸。［2］小人之中庸也：
据朱熹《四书章句集注》，王肃本、程颐本
皆作“小人之反中庸也”。［3］忌惮：顾忌
