it. If you must do violence and injury to the willow
in order to make cups and bowls with it, on your
principles you must in the same way do violence
and injury to humanity in order to fashion from
it benevolence and righteousness! Your words,
alas! would certainly lead all men on to reckon
benevolence and righteousness to be calamities.”
【注释】［1］ 告 子： 战 国 时 期 思 想 家， 年 龄
稍长于孟子，以主张“性无善无不善”的人
性论而著称。［2］杞（q@）柳：落叶丛生灌
木，枝条柔软，可用来编制器物。［3］桮棬
（b8i?qu`n）：此处泛指用柳条做成的筐。［4］
戕贼：毁伤，残害。
【译文】告子说：“人性，好比是杞柳；仁义，
好比用柳条做成的筐子。把人性看作是仁义
的，就如同把柳条直接当作筐子。”
孟子说：“你是顺着杞柳的性状把它做
