叶公语孔子曰：“吾党有直躬者，［1］其
父攘［2］羊，而子证之。”孔子曰：“吾党之
直者异于是，父为子隐，子为父隐，直在其
中矣。”
The duke of Sheh informed Confucius, saying,
“Among us here there are those who may be styled
upright in their conduct. If their father have stolen a
sheep, they will bear witness to the fact.” Confucius
said, “Among us, in our part of the country, those
who are upright are different from this. The father
conceals the misconduct of the son, and the son
conceals the misconduct of the father. Uprightness is
to be found in this.”
【注释】［1］党：乡党。直躬者：直身而行者，
即正直的人。［2］攘（r2ng）：偷窃。
