After Confucius passed away, he was buried on the bank of the Si River in the north of the capital of Lu state. His disciples mourned by the grave for three years, and planted pines, cypresses and various precious trees near the tomb to express their grief. Before leaving, they cried to each other, said farewell to Confucius who rested underground, and left. But Zigong stayed. He build a hut by the tomb and stayed for another three years, then left. Since then, more than 100 families came to settle here, including Confucius' disciples and some Lu people.
