When Confucius learned that Chen Chengzi, a minister of Qi state, murdered Duke Jian of Qi, he quickly had a bath and headed to the court to report it to Duke AI of Lu. He said, "Chen Chengzi killed his monarch, your majesty, please dispatch troops to suppress." Duke Ai said, "Go and report to the three ministers!" After Confucius left the court, he said, "I used to be a minister, so I didn't dare not report. But the duke told me to report to the three ministers!" Confucius then went to visit the three ministers, and they all expressed their disapproval of dispatching troops. Again, Confucius said, "Because I once was a minister, I didn't dare not report." He did not agree with their disapproval, but he could do nothing.
