Zeng Zi once sat with Confucius, and Confucius asked him, "Our former monarch governed the state with the highest morality and best method, so that the people lived in harmony, and there was no mutual resentment between officials and the people. Do you know about this?" Zeng Zi stood up and said, "Sir, I'm not smart enough, how can I supposed to know such a profound truth?" Therefore, Confucius told him about how the monarch, the dukes, the ministers and the civilians perform filial piety. And he said, "To people from the monarch to the civilian, filial piety is everywhere, so no one was worried about that they could not perform it."
